Whenever I think of Junipers I always shake my head and say to myself, "Old Verna". Verna was our neighbor who lived next to our nursery. See was in her eighties and had a small rancher. When it was built she planted many junipers around the house. Never again to be trimmed. Some shrubs can perform well like this especially junipers. They are some of the toughest landscape plants. They are hardy and drought resistant. Junipers range from low ground covers to large conical-pyramidal forms. Their colors are dark green, light green, yellow, to silver gray. These plants love sunny places with well drained soils. Verna's house was ideal for Junipers. She used them for screens, windbreaks, had a few as ground covers, and some as foundation plants. She did not leave enough space prior to planting and thus had thick foliage but poor air circulation around the plants. This left then vulnerable to insects and diseases. One by one her plants did decline because when they were planted the roots were not loosened and suffered from roots growing in circles which girdles the plant. Bag worms infested others. The worst problem was that junipers can't be trimmed back hard and she hardly ever trimmed them. Thus those that survived were over grown, into walkways, and real ugly. Since these plants were so long neglected they had to be removed and could not be salvaged. Now, why if I think this about junipers would I recommend them? The answer is that these plants just need a little attention now and then and they will serve you well. Just attend to them. They will pay you back with their vigor and offer a wide range of variations to help in achieving your landscape goals.
