Hemlocks are native to eastern North America
typically found on northern and eastern slopes with cooler, moister environmental conditions. These plants thrive in latitudes as cold as zone 3.
Habit and Form of Hemlocks
Hemlocks are a needle evergreen with
medium to large tree form.Hemlocks can reach
40' to 70' tall, but can grow larger
conical or pyramidal shape with a 25' to 30' spread with a
soft, graceful, horizontal to pendulous branches and
fine texture.
Summer Foliage of Hemlocks
These are our 8ft Canadian Hemlocks. The leaves of hemlocks are spirally arranged, but are held in a 2-ranked fashion. The needles are flattened. The needles are 0.25" to 0.75" long and about 0.10" wide. New foliage on hemlocks is dark green above with 2 whitish bands on the underside. Autumn Foliage Being an evergreen, there is no fall color change. Flowers Hemlocks are monoecious, with male and female flowers small and not ornamentally important to take note of. Fruit Hemlocks have small cones, about 0.5" to 1.0" long turning light brown in the fall and can be borne in large numbers. Bark of Hemlocks Overall, the bark is a brown color which changes from smooth, to flaky and scaly, and finally to wide flat ridges as the tree ages. Culture of Hemlocks Hemlocks grow best on cool, moist, well-drained soils. You can transplant from containers or B&B trees. We suggest that you avoid dry soils and hot locations as hemlocks dislikes very windy sites. This plant can grow where there is full sun or partial shade. This plant can stand heavy shade. Hemlocks can be pruned into hedges and make a great evergreen hedge where most evergreens will fail. These are our Hemlock liners that are field ready. Liabilities Hermlocks are not not tolerant of pollution or of salt spray. Spider mites thrive on hemlocks and deer like to browse the foliage or rub off the bark with their antlers. This plant is not tolerant of heat or drought and the hemlock woolly adelgid is a new and devastating insect pest that can be easily controlled, but left unchecked can kill large plants just afew years.
