    These are easy to transplant
This Blue Cone Arborvita is 24" and starting to fill out well. This plant transplants easily. Arbs have masses of small fibrous roots which allows them to transplant at most times of the year. This arborvita is known as Thuja Orientalis 'Blue Cone" can be a great addition to your landscape. It has bright green color similar to the Emerald Green Arborvita and has little bronzing in the winter. This arb is different than many other cultivars in that it has bright glaucous blue cones. Perhaps this is why its called, "Blue Cone"????? The Blue Cones have a sharp contrast to the bright green vertical sprays of the plants foliage. The plants form is upright, oval, and almost egg shaped reaching 12-15' in height and 8-10' in width. Blue Cone arbs are easy to plant but afew tips will help your success. When planting, remember that the symptoms of over watering are identical to under watering. More trees, shrubs, and houseplants are killed from overwatering than all other problems combined. Water thoroughly upon planting then water thereafter as needed depending on soil and environmental conditions. At no time should the planting zone be kept soggy. Feel the soil with your finger to test it. It should be moist not spongy wet. The plant should be dried to the point of dampness to the touch before a complete re watering. This regime should be carried out at least through the first few months. Soil moisture should be monitored closely for the next two years with corrective action taken as needed. Fertilizer spikes should never be used. You can tell when the arbs are happy with their new location by looking at the interface of the root ball and the new location. New fibrous roots should appear within weeks of planting.

Some of the common varieties available at Highland Hill Farm (not all listed):
If you have Black Walnut trees consider using Arborvitae. The roots of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and Butternut (Juglans cinerea L.)are known to produce a substance known as juglone (5-hydroxy-alphanapthaquinone). There are many plants such as blackberry, blueberry, azalea, mountain laurel, rhododendron, white pine and apple may be injured or killed within one to two months of growth within the root zone of trees. The toxic zone from a mature tree occurs on average in a 60 foot radius from the trunk, but can be as far as 80 feet. The area affected extends outward each year as a tree enlarges. Many susceptible plants will be dead within the root zone and fail at the margins.
Not all plants are sensitive to juglone. Many trees, vines, shrubs, groundcovers, annuals and perennials will grow in close proximity to a walnut tree. Arborvitae will grow near Walnut trees. Check out other features we have:
